Those, like me, who follow the NFL regularly, know that concussions are a concerning reality of the game. So, instead of taming the game Industrial Designer Michael Princip wants to rebuild the helmet.
The Bulwark,like Princip calls it, has three layers - the top layer split into separate panels, a padded middle layer, and another stiff layer underneath to make a sandwich effect. The idea behind the separate layers is to isolate the impact into one of the panels, rather than letting it dissipate throughout the entire helmet and the brain.
This helmet, is safer than the current helmets but still looks cool, two characteristics that sometimes seem mutually exclusive.
Yet, this is still nothing more than a proposal, and when brands like Riddel and Schitt are a part of the competition, it makes it difficult for this solution to be embraced.
